Negroni was created in Florence between 1919 and 1920 by Count Camillo Negroni: in that period the Count used to go to the aristocratic Caffè Casoni in Via de' Tornabuoni and – bored with the usual American aperitif – asked the barman Fosco Scarselli for a dash of gin instead of soda water in honour of his recent trips to London. What for the Count was «the usual», became for others an "American aperitif Count Negroni style" and for this reason it took the name of the Count who loved it so much.

The cocktail became popular as from the 1950s, first in Italy and then worldwide, to the extent that it was mentioned in one of Ian Fleming’s James Bond novellas, Risiko, in which the legendary agent orders a Negroni while he is in Italy.
